A Primer on Ecollar Dog Training
Ecollars or electronic dog training collars are hailed by some people and despised by others.
If you are unfamiliar with the topic of dog training with an ecollar, they are simply electronic collars that your dog (or cat) wears when being trained.
Ecollars are very similar, in some respects, to the invisible dog fences you probably have seen. With the invisible dog fences, you bury a low voltage electrical line and mark the surface, directly above the line, with flags. You then put a special electronic collar on your dog and let him roam. As soon as the dog steps over the line (or past the flags) he automatically gets a small shock and will most probably back up. The shock is not a huge shock but just enough to make the dog take notice. After he steps past the flags enough times and gets a shock each time, he will eventually wise up and learn to not go past the flags. Eventually he will be completely trained to know that he can't go past the flags. When that happens you can take the ecollar off and your dog should do fine.
When dog training with ecollars, the principle is the same. If the dog does something that he shouldn't do, he gets a slight shock. (the shocks are usually no more than you would experience when you slide your feet over a rug in the dry winter and then touch a metal object). With ecollars, you, or the trainer, issues the shock.
With most dog training ecollars, you can adjust the amount, and length, of shock that the dog receives. The shock is given through a small transmitter which you hold in your hand. When teaching the dog a new command, usually a small, short shock will be enough to correct the dog's disobedience. However, if the dog just won't listen to your command, you can hold the button down for longer times until the dog 'gives in'.
Some say that using ecollars to train your dog is the most fast and efficient way of getting the pet trained.
There is much information out there on ecollars and training with them, just search them out and you can make a very knowledgeable decision.
